1. Your Home is Cluttered
A cluttered home is a sure sign that something needs to change. And there is no better way to deal with the clutter than holding a garage sale. The problem is defining clutter. As we see it, your home is cluttered if you have a hard time moving around without things getting in the way. It’s also cluttered if you have no usable table or shelf space remaining.
2. The Kids Left Things Behind
You might be a garage sale candidate if your kids moved out a long time ago and left some of their possessions behind. You don’t really need their stuff, and they obviously don’t want it anymore. Consider passing it along to someone else who could use it by selling it at a bargain basement price. Doing so is actually kind of freeing.
3. You’ve Been in the Same House for Decades
If you have been living in the same house for decades, there is a good chance you have been filling it up with stuff you barely use. This isn’t a knock against you. Actually, this is a habit we can all fall into if we don’t pay attention. At any rate, being in the same house for decades is a good indication you have plenty of stuff you could sell at a garage sale and not miss once it’s gone.
4. You’re Getting Tired of the Hassle
Next, you might find yourself in the position of just being tired of the hassle of maintaining all of your stuff. For example, you really enjoyed your record collection back in your 20s and 30s. Today it represents a stack of vinyl you constantly have to move just to dust around. You can relieve some of that hassle by selling your records to avid garage sale buyers.
5. You’re Planning to Downsize
Any plans to eventually downsize – whether they are in the short- or long-term – automatically come with the need to pare down your possessions. That is, unless your house already looks vacant because you don’t have enough stuff to fill up. If that’s not the case, imagine getting all the stuff that occupies your current house into a smaller space.
