We have learned from experience how easy it is to adopt a negative attitude that only makes a difficult situation worse. We have also learned that maintaining a positive attitude starts by keeping an eye on what is important.

All of us go through unpleasant periods of life that we would rather have avoided. It is part of living. However, there are always more important things – positive things – that should command our attentions. By keeping our eyes on those things, we become less focused on issues that do not really matter; we become less worried and agitated about things we cannot control. Maintaining a positive attitude is easier as a result.

Family Matters

Of the most important things in all of our lives is family. In the midst of a challenging situation, it is helpful to remember happier times with family members and look forward to more of those times in the future. Your life may be unsettled now, as you pack up your home and prepare to move elsewhere, but you have the upcoming holiday season with family and friends to look forward to.

Another thing to consider in terms of family is how working through your current crisis will benefit everyone in the long run. For example, we know it is very difficult to work through a hoarding situation. Nevertheless, once it is resolved, both you and your family will be better off for it. Focusing on making the lives of your family members better can be just what you need to motivate you to press on.

Health Matters

You are familiar with the phrase, “as long as you have your health that’s all that matters!” Good health may not be all that matters in life, but it certainly is an important component of happiness and productivity. For this reason, we encourage our clients not to stress over the life changes they are currently experiencing. Stress is bad for your health.

Making an effort to maintain good health during a stressful life change can help you navigate that change more easily. It can also help you develop more healthy habits that you can continue long after you work through your challenge. It is amazing to see how many people experience a complete change in their outlook on life just by making the effort to maintain good health.

There are many other things you can focus on to help maintain a positive attitude during trying times. That’s not to say you will not have your moments of difficulty, you probably will. The point is that maintaining a positive attitude is not something that just happens. It is something you make a conscious effort to pursue, and then work at as you go.
