Five Personal Service Qualities of the Successful Concierge

Five Personal Service Qualities of the Successful ConciergeThe personal concierge business is a people-oriented one to the highest degree. In fact, it is all about serving people and their unique needs. That means being a successful concierge requires certain people skills or, as we like to say, “personal service qualities.” The concierge who possesses these qualities is one who will be able to make customers happy under any circumstance.

1. Flexibility

By definition, a concierge service is all about flexibility. If it were not, our customers would have no need of the services we provide. The concierge exists to assist customers in any number of ways because, for one reason or another, the customer has neither the time nor the ability to handle the tasks himself. Thus, the concierge can be hired to do anything from running errands to helping pack a house in preparation for a move.

Flexibility is required because very few plans are executed as originally conceived. Things happen; life happens. A successful concierge needs to be flexible enough to roll with the punches while still making the customer happy.

2. Problem Solving Ability

Going hand-in-hand with flexibility is problem solving ability. The concierge who can look at any problem, think it through, and come up with an appropriate solution is one that does not let less-than-ideal circumstances get in the way. It is an essential personal service quality in a modern culture that is less likely to settle for excuses over results.

3. Creativity

The best concierges possess a great deal of creativity. However, we are not talking about the creativity needed to produce great works of art, though there’s nothing wrong with that; we’re talking about the creativity necessary to look at a problem and find an innovative and unique way to solve it; a way that is best suited to the needs of the customer.

We all know that every person is different, right? As such, the solution for one client may not be appropriate to another. The creative concierge looks at each individual problem in light of the client in question, and then creates innovative ways to make each of them happy.

4. Organizational Skills

For the modern personal concierge, organization is everything. In other words, most of the tasks we perform for our customers revolve around some sort of organization; be it organization of the home, a personal schedule, business affairs, or what have you. The concierge with little or no organizational skills will be lost from day one. Yet the one who is good at organization will always be in demand.

5. Open Mind

Lastly, the best concierges are those who approach every day with an open mind. By this, we mean a person who is not surprised or easily taken back by observing some of the things other people do. Let’s face it, there is a strange world out there involving all sorts of unique people. A good concierge has to be able to adapt without giving the impression he is anxious about a situation. This includes dealing with people who may have, and display, significant personal wealth.

We did not include three others in our list because we consider them character traits rather than personal service qualities. Those character traits are honesty, integrity and a strong work ethic. We believe all three are just as important as the five personal service qualities, if not more so. Why? Because as our customer, you need to be able to know you can trust the ones providing a service that will directly affect you, your family, your home, and your future.
